Prophets of Doom: Obadiah

By Nina Mistula

Obadiah only has one chapter in the Bible. It even has only 21 verses. If you read it, then congratulations! You have actually finished one book in the Bible. In this book, you will see how God punished the Edomites because they betrayed their own relatives.

So you know that the Israelites, who came from the line of Jacob,  are a chosen people. The Edomites, on the other hand, came from the line of Esau. They are relatives but they have never really gotten along because of what happened to their ancestors inn the past. In the book of Amos, God said that the sins of the Edomites are too much and He was going to punish them already. They even joined forces with the enemy of the Israelites, defeated them and went home with all of their belongings. But God’s promise to the Israelites still stands.

What can you learn from the story of Obadiah?

  1. God is true to His word. Psalms 33:4-5 says “For the word of the Lord holds true, and we can trust everything he does. He loves whatever is just and good; the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.” He will fulfill the promises He made to you.

  2. God is our defender. Obadiah 1:10 says, ““Because of the violence you did to your close relatives in Israel, you will be filled with shame and destroyed forever.” God is the one who puts you in the right place. He will fight for you.

  3. God has the final say. Proverbs 16:33 says, “Make your motions and cast your votes, but God has the final say.” Do not listen to the world; listen to God’s word.

If you already know who God is in your life, what should you do?

  1. Claim His promises. Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” Believe that God is true to is word.

  2. Hold in to His promises. Henrews 10:23 says, “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.” Hold on to them but do not be complacent. ‭

How can you hold on to His promises?

  1. Pray until something happens.

  2. Have patience.

  3. Have faith.

  1. Prepare for breakthroughs. Deuteronomy 31:8 says, “Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”” Do not be afraid of the journey in between the promises and the breakthrough.

All of you have gone through different things. But God’s promises to each and every one of you stands true. He will never leave you nor forsake you. He will protect you and will bring you to the promised land. If you feel like you have no one, you have God.
