Let’s talk about the kings that once ruled and commanded Israel. Some kings are worthy, and some are not. Some do what is right in the eyes of the Lord while some do what is just right in their eyes.
19 But the people refused to listen to Samuel. “No!” they said. “We want a king over us. 20 Then we will be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles. (1 Samuel 8:19-20)
When King David unites Israel, there has been peace among the nation for a long time. Israel has no enemy and everyone feared David. Solomon succeeded David but after Solomon, Israel has divided again. Why? Before Solomon died, a prophet went to Jeroboam and told him that God will give him Israel. When Solomon knew about this he ordered to kill Jeroboam, and so Jeroboam went away to hide from the King. After Solomon died, his son Rehoboam succeeded him. The people told Rehoboam that they were treated badly by his father, and if Rehoboam would treat them right they would serve him as their King. But Rehoboam told them that he would treat them bad more than his father did. This triggered Israel’s revolt against Rehoboam and made Jeroboam their king. Just like the prophecy.
Now we have the Northern Kingdom and the Southern Kingdom led and ruled by Jeroboam and Rehoboam. Was this what the Lord wants—a divided nation? No, but everything was according to his plan
There may be kings that led us to destruction but the Lord gave us a King that will bring us salvation. A king will not just do what he wants to do. The one who will not just listen to what he wants to hear. But the one who will live and walk with God. And that is Jesus Christ.
31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David. (Luke 1:31-32)
Out of all kings who ruled and reigned, there are the bad ones, the almost good ones, but only one who is perfect. Sometimes, we may want to be the ruler of our own lives. But as long as you let the wrong one reign in your life, you will not experience salvation. God gave us Jesus Christ. The promise was fulfilled. Jesus Christ will reign. He was the only king that is forever. And for me, he is my only true King.
